Ulu Guar

Female Green Broadbill

September 2 2010. Apart from the 3 Barbets species, there were also other species that I managed to photographed at Ulu Guar. There were Black-headed Bulbul (lifer), Scaly-breasted Bulbul (lifer), Thick-billed Green Pigeon (lifer), Female Green Broadbill (lifer), Asia Fairy-bluebird (lifer), Asia Glossy Starling, Red-eyed Bulbul, Raffles's Malkoha and a pair of Checker-throated Woodies.

The Pigeon was the "early bird" at the fig tree.

Scaly-breasted Bulbul (lifer)
Always stay high up and hide behind the thick leave.
Occasionally It will fly out to the open for the fig fruits.

The couple was looking for insects at the main tree trunk.

Hi Mohd,

Thanks for your comment.
Great to know that you are interested in starting bird photography. Any of the new DSLR is suitable for bird photography. On the question of which lens to start with is really depends on your budget.
1. Budget range are (since you are Canon shooter I only recommend lenses suitable for Canon EF mount) Cost less then RM 5K:
Canon EF 400mm F5.6, Canon EF 100-400 IS, Canon EF 300 mm F4 IS + 1.4 TC and Sigma 150-500.

High end range are: EF 500 F4 IS, EF600 F4 IS, EF 800 F5.6 IS and Sigma 300-800 F5.6.

Pro for High End
Superior optical quality. It means superb sharpness, contrast, bokeh (to isolate the subject from the background), Superb AF capability and speed.

Con
Very expensive.

Hi Mohd,

For a complete system, you need to allocate budget for tripod, lens plate and tripod head. These are equally important also.
